2012

Everyone has New Year Resolutions but hardly anyone ever keeps them... Well I came up with some manageable ones.

House
Hopefully we will be in our house very soon in the coming weeks. I am not holding my breath on these slow pokes but I have learned that patience really is a virtue. I feel like this house has been our biggest hurdle so far in our marriage and it has made us even stronger. And it has increased our dismay in the banking industry :(

Plan trip for Ireland 2013
It is no secret I want to go to Ireland. I am pushing for a 2013 Anniversary trip (Three years is longer than any Kim K or Britney Spears marriage). I have found some really expensive vacations but also located some more manageable ones. Crossing my fingers that my persuasive personality works on the hubs.

Take more weekend trips
I want to take more weekend trips to experience local towns. I loved our trip to Savannah so now I am aching to hit up Charleston and Beaufort, SC. Just the charm draws me in. This also leads into my next goal:

Spend more time with friends
Being in another state makes it difficult to keep up with all my favorites. I want more weekends with them at their new residences (AL, FL, MS, DC). Some of these 2012 weddings help with this one too :)

Get and stay in shape
I want to run a 5K and maybe eventually the Peachtree Road Race. Now, I don't enjoy the same rigid  workout every day so I am trying to change it up. I think this goal is on everyone's list but I honestly want to make better choices for myself. I am not talking about a diet, because those fail. I am talking about a lifestyle change. Crossing my fingers because this is a biggie.

Join more organizations
I want to get more involved. I was in so many clubs throughout high school and college and I miss that. I miss the interaction with different people and the always something new aspect. I have been trying for months to take a volunteer orientation for the Make-A-Wish foundation but work has always come up. I have also been pondering becoming a "Big Sister" for a metro Atlanta child but this is a decision Aaron and I have to make together as it is such a big commitment. This goal is another biggie for me.

Enjoy life more
As corny as this sounds, I just want to enjoy things more. Of course there are times that everyone feels down but I want to get out there more. Try new things, experience weird restaurants... fun things like that. I would love to take a cooking class or eat at the local Moroccan restaurant. Here's to loving the city we live in :)

Hope you have a great new year!

Love,

P.S. - Blog birthday shout-outs will be taking a back seat in the new year. I love you all, but the time commitment is just too much with everything going on.

Souper

In the process of baking I decided to haul out the crockpot, for some easy dinners in this short, busy week.

I, of course, found this recipe on Pinterest and it was super yummy. I altered it a tad due to ingredients and timing.

Parmesan Vegetable Soup (I renamed it because I felt the other title did not do it justice)
2 (14 oz) cans diced tomatoes, with juice
1 cup finely diced celery
1 cup finely diced carrots
1 cup finely diced onions
1/4 cup fresh basil
4 cups chicken broth
½ cup flour
1 cup Parmesan cheese
½ cup butter
2 cups half and half, warmed
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper

  • Add tomatoes, celery, carrots, chicken broth, onions, oregano, basil to a large slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 5-7 hours, until flavors are blended and vegetables are soft.
  • About an hour before serving prepare a roux. Melt butter over low heat in a skillet and add flour. Stir constantly with a whisk for 5-7 minutes. Slowly stir in 1 cup hot soup. Add another 3 cups and stir until smooth. Add all back into the slow cooker.
  • Stir and add the Parmesan cheese, warmed half and half, salt and pepper.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for another hour until ready to serve.

I also made my all time favorite cookies again. So super yummy!

C. Wonder

Stop what you are doing right now and go to this site, C. Wonder. It is stunning and pretty reasonable in the price arena.

The festive colors and preppiness may remind you of Tory Burch... Well that is because C. Wonder is the new project of Chris Burch, Tory's ex-husband and the brain behind the Tory emblem. He is a genuis just for that. I could love this store mainly because I love all things Tory :)

I want a C. Wonder store to grace Atlanta so bad and I heard a rumor that just may happen in the new year (fingers crossed).

But, the online site just became available and it is lethal to the pocket book. That was your warning.

Rockin Around the Christmas Tree

First off, a big Happy Birthday to my Grandmother. I can't wait to see you in a few weeks :) I hope you have one amazing day!

On the holiday front, we got our Christmas decor up last week but I have been so swamped at work, so I am just now sharing.  Yay for Christmas greens and their amazing smells. I can stare at our tree for hours :)

Festive table decor - actually ornaments I have had since college that I hate to part with

New angel I got in Highlands

The tree

Mantle - I opted to go garland instead of Magnolia leaves

Pinterest project - Excuse the awful print job (we are so buying a new printer asap)
It is all of our 2010 Christmas cards so we can see how people change year to year :)

J. Crew

If you personally know me, you know that I have a sincere love for J. Crew. My love stops at some of their INSANE prices though. Seriously, I am not paid in gold.

Now I have started to venture out to other stores but I always stop in J. Crew every time I hit the mall.(I actually had a horrifying experience recently in the Lenox store but I won't share any details; I broke out in hives, almost cried and it is a secret Aaron will take to his grave... Seriously your grave Aaron)

Anyways, I am trying to make a massive dent in my holiday shopping this weekend and the only thing I can think about are all the clothing sales for me. Loft has half off, Anthropologie has a big sale section and I need some tops from Urban Outfitters. Does that make me an awful person? I am telling myself no because I would buy stuff even if it was May.

So the whole point of that tangent was that I love J. Crew and always will if they keep make awesomeness like these...

Low and behold a J. Crew coupon code just popped in my inbox. Must be fate!

Give back

Yep it is Christmas time! No looking back now!

We only have two gifts and they are for our nephew.... and he was the only one with no list :)

Anyways,  I wanted to share a family tradition Aaron and I started last year and are continuing again. I guess that makes it an annual thing.

I am very thankful that I work for another company that believes in giving back to the community; most importantly, giving to children that can't help the situation they live in.

Aaron and I adopted a 3-year-old Salvation Army Angel and had fun picking out items on his wish list. The picture below doesn't show much due to my awful improtu cell phone photo, but he got some Toy Story figures, cars, a sweatshirt, sweatpants, jeans, several shirts and a jacket. It was kind of fun scouring the toy section for some items on his list.

There are thousands of charities out there and they seem to all have a cause this time of the year. I am not saying to go out there and give your last paycheck but a little goes a long way. Aaron and I spent under $75 and this will probably be all this little boy will get for Christmas. So pick up a toy to donate, some canned goods or give up that lunch out.

It feels really good to give a little back.

Highlands

This Thanksgiving, Aaron and I trekked up to Highlands, NC, to meet my parents for a much needed weekend away. The trip was only about 2 1/2 hours so it was perfect with all the mountain views (would have been shorter without the dreaded Atlanta traffic).

Highlands is gorgeous... the most precious little town nestled in the mountains. The house was also perfect for the fam, the dogs, lots of food and football.

(This a warning that there are a lot of Winston pics ahead.)
This captures his pure hatred of winding mountain roads. He is sprawled out for dear life.
Our stay started out with dinner at the local pizza joint and apparently every other visitor had the same plan (maybe because every other restaurant was closed)
The dogs are suited up for a hike to Dry Falls
This is Winston trying to avoid Aubie sitting on him
Dry Falls which is ironically not dry at all
You can walk under the falls too!
My boys
Our hike began here...
And ended at the top of Whiteside Mountain
My fear of heights wasn't too much of a problem
Gorgeous view
Couple shot
The parentals
Aaron was on a ledge at this point to capture the pic
We tried to capture a father/son moment but this was as close as Winston would get
Granite City
Which was just a bunch of huge rocks, ledges and climbing places
Aaron captured my out-of-shape self scaling the hill
Sunset Rock (a little foggy but a view of Highlands)
And Winston thought he was a cat and lounged on the couch
And here is beggar Winston. He liked turkey and sweet potato casserole :)
And another picture of the fur baby morphing into a frog (or at least his face looks like that)

It was an amazing trip full of laughs, family and relaxation. Just what we needed!

Now back to the real world after a few days away from reality :(

Love,
