Weekend Happenings

Our weekend was pretty low-key but full of home improvement projects.

Mom was in town for a work event so she stayed and unveiled our finished curtains. Woohoo! Finally, curtains in our dining room and they are absolutely beautiful. She did such a gorgeous job!

Here is a sneak peak of our newest project... hardwood floors! Our house boasted some lovely 1970-esque carpeted stairs and they were looking gross. We decided to install wood stair treads and match the rest of the house with installing hardwoods in the upstairs hallway.

I also had to include this recipe that was super yummy (props to Megan at Fried Green Pickles)

Guest Bath "Beautification"

Y'all.... our guest bath sink console was not pretty. It was a horrid 1970s marble finish. Like brown swirls were happening. To top it off, the bathroom came with some duck knobs and stained acrylic faucet handles.

So... the hubs and my dad appeased my desire for a new countertop. When I say new top, I mean one that is pre-measured and straight from Lowe's. We did the whole re-do for under $200.

Thursday Tidbits

1. In preparation of our trip to Ireland, Aaron and I are researching our ancestors to see if we have Irish roots. Y'all... I love history so I am completely mesmerized at this entire site. We sat on it for about four hours last night. Not going to lie, I got a little teary eyed when I saw my grandfather's handwriting on his draft card.

2. We are going to the beach next week and that is all I can think about! After only taking 2 vacation days this year, vacay is majorly on my mind.

3. We had this summer salad as a side dish the other night.

 Watermelon + Feta + Shallots + Balsamic = super easy & yummy

4. We are having hardwoods installed over the next few days along with our nasty 1970s stairs finally getting a facelift. I have a slight panic attack it will dry slow as molasses and we can't shower for a week (pray for my co-workers if that is the case).

5. In case you have been living in a hole, the royal baby finally arrived. Can we just talk about how Kate is a Pregnancy Unicorn. I mean seriously... couldn't you just have some swollen ankles and puffy cheeks just to make us commoners feel better? (This is the sincerest compliment by the way).

Estate Sale Find

My mom is a killer estate sale scouter. She has found tons of items for our house.

The living room needed another chair and I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money. I also had a lot of leftover fabric so I wanted something to re-upholster. Kudos to the Hubs labored over the painting for a good solid week (lesson learned: don't add the lacquer finish paint)

I give you the before and after:

Pom-Poms and Tassels

Let me preface this by saying I am not a fringe person. I like simple, plain with no fru-fru. But... I love this influx of pom-poms and tassels. Maybe I am starting to like a little embellishment.

Tuesday Thoughts

Sorry for the blog silence. With out-of-town travels, busy days and after-work meetings, we haven't had much downtime at all! (Just humor me and say you missed me :) )

Here are some random thoughts to get you through your Tuesday:

I am new to this trendy little app and I am horrible at it. I either forget to send it, leave off a caption or miss my incoming pictures all together. Holding the link is just too time consuming I guess. It seriously makes me feel super old and super lame.

I bit the bullet and signed up for a 5k in November. It takes place Thanksgiving morning so I will be sure to indulge in my fair share of food later that day. I needed the motivation to hit the pavement so hopefully this is just the thing. The fact I am going to the beach in two weeks was apparently not enough.

I am becoming one of those people. I keep instagramming pictures of my children. They happen to have four legs and smell sometimes but I still love to document their weirdness cuteness. I am trying to not but let's face it... I haven't had any other intsa-worthy inspirations lately.

In September, the hubs and I are headed to Ireland for a week. I am so excited for this trip. Logically I am already compiling a packing list. (That is totally normal... right?) I am pondering this purchase for the trip.

Cucumber-Basil Dressing

With a short week, I wanted a foul-proof lunch. The latest issue of Southern Living had some great recipes so naturally I couldn't resist making one.

As a Southerner, I love tomatoes. I love an easy tomato sandwich with mayo, bread and fresh tomatoes. My current favorite are heirloom tomatoes, which are perfect for lunch.

Ingredients (I made a 1/3 of what this calls for)
  • 4 c peeled, seeded, and thinly sliced cucumbers
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 c Greek yogurt
  • 1 1/2 c Mayo
  • 2 tbsp onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp garlic, pressed
  • 1/2 c fresh basil, chopped
  • 1/2 c whole buttermilk
  • 1/4 c lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground pepper
  • Toss together cucumbers and salt (first two ingredients); Drain in a colander 30 minutes.
  • Whisk together yogurt and remaining ingredients; Stir in cucumbers; let stand 30 minutes.
  • Refrigerate up to 2 days.

This past week was the Hub's birthday and we celebrated throughout the week in high style.

1) We celebrated the big day with birthday decor and a homemade cake.
2) We also celebrated at our favorite restaurant in Atlanta, South City Kitchen.
3) Atlanta, also known as ATLwood, is home to some major filming locations. This house is down the street and was the location for a new movie with Jon Hamm. Pretty cool to see all the behind the scenes set-up, but the local security guard did not seem to think so.
4) In addition to Music Midtown tickets, Hubs got to drive his dream car yesterday as a b-day gift. Since a quarter million dollar car price tag is not in our future, I thought I could splurge for a few laps.
5) I also took part in the picture momentos.
